Is Undergraduate Spam under Control?

چکیده
During the past few years, spam has invaded electronic mail boxes and become one of the major challenges for information systems (IS) professionals. Spam decreases user productivity, erodes electronic mail reliability, and requires the maintenance of spam-filtering software that drains the IS budget. Although spam is the largest type of electronic mail received, spam levels have begun to decrease. An important question, however, is whether the trend in industry is consistent among our undergraduate population. As a result, this paper empirically investigates spam incidence from a longitudinal perspective. Over 2,200 surveys from students enrolled in various School of Business courses were collected during a nine consecutive semester (four and one-half year) period. Electronic messaging was examined by type, gender, and semester. Results suggest that spam appears to have peaked and is dramatically decreasing both in quantity and as a percentage of total electronic mail received. Moreover, undergraduate spam incidence appears to be less prevalent than levels indicated in general population electronic mail. Gender, however, does not appear to be an important factor with regard to spam incidence. Another finding is that class-related electronic mail is now more common than personal

User Control over User Adaptation: A Case Study
The A theory of user expectation of system interaction is introduced in the context of User Adapted Interfaces. The usability of an intelligent email client that learns to filter spam emails is tested under three variants of adaptation: no user modeling, user modeling with fixed (optimal) spam cut-offs, and user modeling with user adjustable spam cut-offs. The results supported our hypothesis t...
متن کاملTowards Improving E-mail Content Classification for Spam Control: Architecture, Abstraction, and Strategies
This dissertation discusses techniques to improve the effectiveness and the efficiency of spam control. Specifically, layer-3 e-mail content classification is proposed to allow e-mail pre-classification (for fast spam detection at receiving e-mail servers) and to allow distributed processing at network nodes for fast spam detection at spam control points, e.g., at e-mail servers. Fast spam dete...

According to this definition, problems arise in the field of marketing and advertising for example, it is possible that some of the advertising emails become spam for some users, and not spam for others. To deal with this problem, many researchers design an anti-s...
متن کاملA Classification Method for E-mail Spam Using a Hybrid Approach for Feature Selection Optimization
Spam is an unwanted email that is harmful to communications around the world. Spam leads to a growing problem in a personal email, so it would be essential to detect it. Machine learning is very useful to solve this problem as it shows good results in order to learn all the requisite patterns for classification due to its adaptive existence. Nonetheless, in spam detection, there are a large num...
